Each month customers of the Beverley Building Society decide which charity should receive a £250 donation and this month was the turn of Armed Forces charity – SSAFA.

The Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA) is the UK’s oldest Armed Forces charity set up over 125 years ago to help former and serving members of the UK Armed Forces and their families.

Although SSAFA are a national charity the regional branch is based in East Yorkshire and money raised locally is used to support those living in the area.

Bernadette Grimes MBE, SSAFA East Yorkshire Branch Secretary said:

“I was delighted to learn that SSAFA East Yorkshire was voted as the Charity of the Month by the customers of the Beverley Building Society. This is very appropriate as SSAFA are organising the Beverley Armed Forces Day on 7th July 2013.”

“Many thanks to Michael Plaster, Marketing Manager and the staff of the Beverley Building Society for their very generous cheque of £250. This money will be used locally to help a needy client.”

Beverley Armed Forces day will take place on Sunday 7th July and is set to feature an open-air concert to showcase a number of local performers.

The event will also see troops march through the town to exercise their freedom rights that were granted by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in 2010.

The Beverley Building Society’s Charity of the Month Competition is now in its second year of running and has so far donated a total of £4,250 to charities.

If anybody would like to nominate a charity for inclusion in the Beverley’s monthly voting process, you can email michael.plaster@beverleybs.co.uk, tweet @beverleybs, or call in and speak to one of the team.
