Whistle Stop Bowls Most Successful Yet

Beverley Town Bowling Club said the 2013 Whistle Stop Bowls Contest, which was won by Hornsea Prom was the best one yet say club officials.

The weekend saw 32 teams travel from places as far away as Grimsby to take part in the annual competition held at the Norwood Recreation Ground.

Now in its 29th year the Whistle Stop Bowls is the bowling club’s key fund-raising event;

Trevor West who first brought the event to Norwood said;

“Saturday was a huge success. The event has come a long way since we held the first one back in 1984.”

Trevor got the idea for the event after attending another Whistle Stop competition, he felt that he could not only host one in Beverley but do it much better.

He approached the club’s committee and asked if he could run one in Beverley, he then set about writing to people and clubs on a personal level inviting them to take part.

Trevor told HU17.net;

“Apart from maybe one or two events I feel other competitions are not as good as ours. We have many advantages here in Beverley including the wonderful facilities.”

“There is lots of secure off-road parking, we have a bar and of course, a club house. With plenty of room around the bowling green’s people can always find space and shelter.”

“The ladies in the club house do a fantastic job at making people feel welcome.”

Trevor is keen on highlighting the support given by the members of the club for the annual event, he said;

“Our members may appear to be laid back for most of the year, but they certainly come alive for this event.”

“All the prizes you see are donated by the members here at Beverley Town Bowls Club.”

Further help is provided through the events sponsors, the Beverley Building Society and Guest & Philips both support

Michael Plaster, Marketing Manager for Beverley Building Society said;

“We have been supporting the Beverley Bowling Club for many years now and it’s great to see the Whistle Stop event becoming more and more popular.”

“The Society prides itself on the relationship it has with the local community so we feel supporting these kind of events is very important.”

“Congratulations to this year’s winner!”
