Customers at Tesco Superstore in Beverley will be urged to donate food to help people in need this Friday and Saturday as the retailer gears up to hold the biggest ever food collection in the UK.
Tesco will be joined by Foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare for the collection.
Customers at the Beverley Tesco will be given a special selected shopping list when they enter the store and will be asked to pick up an item of food such as long-life milk, cereal, tinned foods and tea and coffee before donating it at the end of their shop.
The food will then be distributed to the local FareShare depot before being given to people in times of crisis.
Elaine Marritt, store manager at Beverley Tesco said: “Our customers were incredibly generous when we held our last food collection in December, so we’re hoping to collect an even bigger total this time around.
“All our colleagues and volunteers from FareShare are really looking forward to the collection as it gives us a real opportunity to help local people who are in need.”
Tesco held its first national collection in December last year, raising the equivalent of 2.4 million meals. Like December, the retailer will be topping up total donations by a further 30%.
