Bill Rigby, a well known community environmental activist is standing for the Green Party in the St Mary’s East by-election.
Announcing his candidacy Bill said:
“Green politics is at its heart local politics. And I believe that a Green councillor on Beverley Town Council would signal a fresh start for Beverley.”
“Our campaign will focus on two areas: what we in Beverley can do to help our most vulnerable neighbours at a time when they are suffering the most, and how we can protect Beverley’s heritage, its environment, and its small businesses when they are at risk from big developers.”
Rigby, who has lived in the St Mary’s East ward since 1990 has a background in local government and education, having worked for Humberside Council’s education department until 1996 and is now working full time on environment and justice issues.
Having helped to found Beverley’s Friends of the Earth group as well as participating in the Town Improvement Group and Renaissance, Bill has been a active member of the community campaigning to save heritage like Norwood House and critical of the Saturday Market ‘improvements’.
Asked why he supported these campaigns Bill said:
“Heritage is central to Beverley’s community, but also to its tourism. Beverley does not fulfil its tourism potential which could bring much needed jobs to this beautiful market town.”
“Beverley is at a crossroads. It can be the kind of place we want to live in, or it can become a place dominated by mega business, cars, and vested interests.”
“I am deeply committed to the best interest of the town, its citizens and its future.”
