New Sports Degree Saves Thousands On University Fees

Learners who want to gain a higher level sports qualification can now study for a full bachelor of science degree at East Riding College.

From September, the College will be running a one-year “top-up” course, equivalent to the final year of a degree, at its Beverley and Bridlington campuses.

This is in addition to its well-established Foundation Degree in Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences which also runs at the two campuses and is the equivalent to the first two years of a degree.

With tuition fees at £5,750 per year, studying for the foundation degree and then the degree over three years could save students almost £10,000 compared to university fees.

Both courses are aimed at people who want to pursue a career in the sports and leisure industry gaining entry into higher level jobs such as sports development officers, leisure and gym managers, sports coaches and health workers.

Head of sport Paul Smith said: “This top-up degree is for students who are looking to develop their understanding of sport, exercise and coaching for competition, recreation and health.

“The course allows people to expand their existing knowledge through a large range of exercise, fitness and coaching-based modules.”

“Students will also benefit from carrying out a research dissertation based on an area that they are particularly interested in.”

“The degree programme is flexible enough that students can target their own career route or sporting interests ensuring they leave the course in the best possible position to follow their career plans.”

Students on the top-up degree will cover subjects such as physical activity, health promotion, specialist coaching and leadership, the analysis of sports performance and current practices in physical education and coaching.
