Open Events For New Teacher Training Courses

Aspiring teachers can learn more about training courses at East Riding College at two open days in the coming weeks.

The events cover the full range of qualifications available at the College, from short introductory courses to three-year degrees.

They are being held to launch the new Pre-Service Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), the key courses to enable people to qualify as a teacher.

The main advantages of these two new courses are that they do not require the student to be in a teaching role already, which is a major barrier to many would-be teachers.

Curriculum leader John Aston said: “Our teacher training courses are extremely popular with people who have decided to change career and are looking to retrain.

“The fact the traditional Cert Ed and PGCE require the learner already to have a teaching role or be able to source their own work experience has long been a significant barrier to applicants.

“Our new ‘pre-service’ courses mean that students can enrol at East Riding College without having to worry about this as the College will aim to arrange their work experience for them.

“They are designed for lecturers, teachers and trainers who would like to work in the post-compulsory teaching sector, including further, higher and adult education, community and youth services, the health services, uniformed services, private training providers and large organisations with their own training departments.”

The open events will be held as follows:
• Gallows Lane, Beverley: Tuesday, August 27, 5.30pm to 7.30pm
• St Mary’s Walk, Bridlington: Tuesday, September 3, 5.30pm to 7.30pm

Aside from the Cert Ed and PGCE, the College also runs the short introductory course Level Four Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, the Level Five Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and the BA (Hons) in Education and Professional Development.
