East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s 10 household waste recycling sites now accept cooking oil which will be turned into bio fuel.
Collection tanks have been installed over the last few weeks and site staff will be on hand to help transfer the oil.
Recycling cooking oil keeps it out of landfill and also prevents it being poured down drains where it clogs pipes resulting in clean up costs up to £15m a year in the UK.
One litre of used cooking oil is enough to pollute up to a million litres of water. When sent to landfill, it pollutes watercourses, killing fish and other aquatic life. It can increase the amount of vermin in an area, as they are drawn to the protein in the oil.
Turning used cooking oil into bio fuel also reduces the reliance on fossil fuels.
The sites are at Weel, Beverley; Carnaby, Bridlington; Kellythorpe, Driffield; Airmyn, Goole; Preston, Hedon; Humberfield, Hessle; Holme on Spalding Moor; Hornsea; Pocklington; Withernsea.
