College Offer Grants Of Upto £20,000 For Trainee Teachers

Grants of up to £20,000 are being offered to graduates who train to be maths or English teachers on a new full-time course offered by East Riding College.

The bursaries are available to those who have graduated with maths or English degrees, or other degrees which include maths or English, and who want to train to teach one of the subjects in a further education college.

And they are available to people who enrol on the new Pre-Service Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), a one-year full-time course which will be starting at the College’s Bridlington campus this September.

The course is especially appealing to aspiring educators as it does not require them already to be employed as a teacher in order to gain the required work experience.

Lecturer John Aston said: “Our new PGCE course is the ideal way to embark on a career in teaching, as it covers the syllabus in one year and the College helps learners to secure that all-important work experience.

“With the announcement of these bursaries by the government, the course now represents an excellent opportunity for people who are looking to teach English or maths in a college environment.

“Our very reasonable course fees and the availability of these bursaries mean there has never been a better time to train to be a maths or English teacher.”

The bursary package will be available for two years and offers a top grant of £20,000 to maths graduates with a first class degree, with smaller amounts for those with second class and English degrees.

It forms part of a government commitment to raising standards in the teaching of maths and English across the board and eligibility criteria apply.

East Riding College has introduced the one-year full-time Pre-Service PGCE and Certificate in Education for people who want to train to be a teacher but are not yet employed as one.

The courses complement the existing two-year part-time In-Service PGCE and Certificate in Education, for those who are employed as teachers or trainers and need to formalise their qualifications.
