Beverley & East Riding Golf Club has entered into the Cancer Research sponsored Hall of Fame golf tournament for the last few years, but never before has it raised so much money for this worthy cause.
Brian Shaw, club member since 2003, was the winner of the local Hall of Fame competition, and was then charged with the task of raising as much money as possible prior to the regional finals in Nottingham.
Brian said:
“Like most of us, I’ve popped money into charity boxes and sponsored other people in their grand events, but never before have I actually made any effort to raise money myself.”
With the support of the golf club’s members – most especially the seniors, known as EGGS – Brian raised about £600 and then started using social media sites.
Through them he was able to announce that he had done well enough in Nottingham to qualify for the national final at Worksop Golf Club in late September. This allowed him to seek support from a wider, international, network, which has now seen the figure raised increase to £1,000.
Brian added:
“It’s nice that Beverley Golf Club, in addition to it’s annual Gent’s and Lady’s Captains charity efforts can do something extra for the benefit of others. Most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another, indeed many of us have lost several loved ones to it, so anything that brings closer the possibility to cure and prevent Cancer is very welcome.”
Richard Reynolds, club manager, said:
“Beverley & East Riding Golf Club is proud that one of its members is making such an effort to raise money for charity and is happy to support Brian in any way it can.”
The national final of the Hall of Fame in aid of Cancer Research will take place over two rounds of golf on the 23 and 24 September and Beverley & East Riding Golf Club can be supported in its help for this charity by donating through the following www.justgiving.com/Brian-Shaw1 website.
