Magical folk tales, superheroes and even the well-loved Gruffalo story will be bringing the library and Beverley Treasure House alive, as part of Beverley Literature Festival’s exciting children’s programme.
From Saturday, 12 October to Sunday, 13 October, young readers and budding writers can take part in kids’ cabarets, storytelling sessions and drawing workshops and much, much more. Children and the young at heart all welcome.
Saturday sees Beverley Library become the site of a thrilling adventure, as the Stephen Joseph Theatre OutReach team present three performances of The Quest. Three is the magic number for workshops too, as the Treasure House plays host to a trio of exciting, inspiring sessions to help get youngsters writing. The Etherington Brothers will be unleashing a whirlwind of energy and creativity, as they share their brilliant story-starting tips, followed by Daniel Webb bringing book reviewing to life, in a workshop that may contain chocolate, and Wordquake wordsmith, Andrew McMillan, hosts a day-long course for teens on writing and performing poetry, ending with a short public performance at the library.
For those of a more scientific persuasion, Jules Howard helps junior scientists explore the fantastic world of fossils, as they learn more about the mysterious world of dinosaurs and even hold a T-Rex’s tooth. Saturday ends, fittingly, with milk and cookies, pyjamas and a Gruffalo-themed bedtime story from Puppets, Plays and Story Days.
Sunday is super, as the Art Heroes host two comicbook workshops, to help the cartoonists of tomorrow improve their drawing and storytelling. Storytelling is also top of the agenda for Xanthe Gresham, as she leads a world tour of global folk tales, before joining renowned poet Daljit Nagra for an epic retelling of the ancient story of The Ramayana, devised especially for the Beverley Literature Festival. Poetry double act, Spill the Beans, also present their family-friendly cabaret, packed full of rhymes, jokes and rock ‘n’ roll.
