Haworth Knock Beverley Out Of The Yorkshire Cup

Haworth Knock Beverley Out Of The Yorkshire Cup

The form book was turned inside out for this second round tie at the Beverley Leisure Centre on Saturday.

While Beverley ARLC had squeezed past Scarborough last weekend, the previous week Haworth Park had been defeated by Scarborough 44-22 in the league.

Beverley approached the game in a confident fashion, and they appeared little sign of the score line that was to come after 20 minutes.

The blue and golds led 12-4, courtesy of a Ryan Watkin try which saw him jink through the opposing defence to score beneath the posts.

They added a further try when Watkin’s crossfield kick was fumbled and pounced on by Nathan Hoggard to score wide out. Watkin converted both tries, and things were looking up after the visitors had initially taken the lead in the first minute of the game.

However, the visitors began to dominate possession and territory and added a further four tries before the break, two of which were in injury time at the end of the half.

The second half continued in a similar vein with most of it been played in Beverley’s half of the field. A number of visiting tries resulted from errors and misfielded kicks, which every time resulted in try for the much changed Haworth Park outfit from last season. There were, however, some spirited efforts from the home players.

Man of the match Ryan Watkin along with Ian Lane probed away all afternoon against an iron-clad defence. Gavin Proctor looked lively on his return from injury, and Lee Stevens continued to take the ball up in his usual no-nonsense style.

Beverley managed a late consolation try from Lee Falcus, but visiting outfit containing a number of ex-professionals from York and Doncaster, were safely through to the last 16 of the competition.

Beverley are now without a game until October 19th. Next weekend there is no Hull & District fixtures due to the Super League Grand Final and the following week the club had requested a blank weekend due to the Charity Sports Dinner being held on the Friday evening before.

Tickets are still available for the bash at Lazaats in Cottingham. Enquiries can be made to Ian Pollard on at the Durham Ox.
