A new exhibition of printmaking and textiles opens at the Treasure House on Saturday, 26 October.
‘Textures of Spurn’ is an exhibition of artwork created during Alice Fox’s residency at Spurn in 2012.
Alice spent six months recording experiences of this special place working from a makeshift studio in the Spurn lighthouse tower.
The exhibition includes two large textile wall hangings called Spurn Cloths which were inspired by the constantly changing bands of texture in sand, sea and sky.
The colour on the textile pieces was created by wrapping some of the fabric around bolts on groynes on the beach. As the tide comes in and out, the rust on the bolts transfers colour to the fabric and the salt in the seawater makes the colour permanent.
The works on paper explore the shapes and patterns of organic and manmade debris found along the tide line and the ways it is washed up, sorted and arranged by the waves. The works on paper are small records of walks on the shore – each one a journey or a snapshot of time embodied in paper, print and stitch.
Also on display are a large number of sketchbooks and notebooks made by Alice during her residency.
Alice’s residency and subsequent gallery tour of the work produced are supported by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England.
