Following on from Beverley in Bloom’s silver gilt award as part of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, organisers are seeking volunteers to help plant builds in autumn in preparation for spring.
Taking place on Saturday 26th October on the Admiral Walker Road green, the event will start at 11am and last until 1pm.
Organiser Margaret Martin explained:
“We are encouraging people who live in the area around Admiral Walker Road to come out and help us plant bulbs, which will really brighten up the green next year.”
“We are sending flyers to Keldmarsh Primary School and Minster Primary School, in the hope that families in the neighbourhood will be able to spare a little bit of time to help us with this. Even if people can only spare a few minutes to plant a handful of bulbs, every little bit will help.”
Fellow Beverley in Bloom member, Christine Upton, added:
“This green is enjoyed by a lot of people – ranging from children who play on it and dog walkers, to local residents who walk by it on the way to work. It would be lovely to see the neighbourhood turn out to support us.”
“If a lot of people turn up at 11am, we will get through the bulbs in next to no time, so we advise volunteers join us as early as possible.”
Working in partnership with Beverley Town Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the group will make a map of the green and identify where bulbs have been planted, so grounds maintenance officers know where to work around them when mowing the grass.
Margaret concluded:
“It was great for Beverley in Bloom to do so well in the Yorkshire in Bloom awards, but our main focus is on the community and helping to brighten it up for everyone to enjoy. With the support of families, it would be great to see children learning the basics about bulbs and returning in a few months time to see the colourful rewards of their work.”
