Taking place on the 29th November Saturday Market will feature an outdoor ice rink, giant cinema and a Winter Fayre that will have stalls form a number of local charities.

Mayor of Beverley Martin Cox will be given the honour of opening proceedings at Saturday Market while the traders in Wednesday Market are also planning another spectacular evening on the same night that will include music and other festive treats.

Radio station KC FM will be doing a number of live links throughout the event too. The Beverley Christmas Lights switch on event looks set to get the festive period off to a cracking start as organiser focus on community and Christmas cheer.

This year sees the continued involvement of the Beverley Lions as they turn they light up their four Christmas trees. The Lions switch on will include children from Beverley’s primary schools who will be performing Christmas carols at each of the four trees between Market Cross and Wednesday Market.

Phil Scaife from the Beverley Christmas Lights Group said;

“This year we want to make sure it is a community event, Market will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland for the town’s big Christmas light switch on event.

Phil said;

“The ice rink will be set up and open to the public by Friday lunch time, it is something new and we hope it will be popular. All the proceeds raised from the ice rink will be used to help fund future events for the town.”

“We have also brought in a giant screen that is 30 feet by 18 feet and at 7.45pm we will be projecting a festive movie, The Snowman, onto it. I am sure this will be a truly magical experience for people of any age.”

“This year we want to make sure it is a community event, with this in mind we have introduced the Winter Fayre, which is supporting groups that support the local community. These include charities and school fund raising groups like the Friends of Longcroft School and St Mary’s School.”

“The whole point of Christmas is community, so we have made the schedule reflect that as much as a possible. Saturday Market will be the main area where things are happening. This has been done, so we can keep all the activities and attractions as festive and as central as possible.”

The most important person on the night is of course Father Christmas, and he is expected to make an appearance at the event as Beverley gets into the festive spirit.
