184 Arrested For Burglary So Far This Year In The East Riding

Humberside Police

Ever wondered how many people are actively ‘working’ in the East Riding trying door handles or peering through windows to see which one is a viable option to sneak in and pinch something?

Well since the beginning of the year officers in the East Riding have locked up 184 people in connection with burglary.

Although the numbers may seem high, detectives say the majority of burglars are opportunistic and often burgle as a ‘profession’ therefore are regularly arrested for their crime and will have been arrested more than once this year.

Detective Inspector Joanne Roe; in charge of all Burglary and Vehicle Crime investigations within the East Riding said: “To say my detectives work tirelessly to bring these offenders to justice is an understatement. Each and every officer who works for Humberside Police is determined to catch burglars and reduce opportunities for offenders to cause misery to innocent people.

“One in every three burglaries (1/3) reported to the police from within the East Riding is due to a door being left unlocked, window being left ajar to allow some air in or a forgetful resident not thinking to check their windows and doors are locked when nipping upstairs or into the garden.

‘The East Riding is one of the nicest places in the country to live; I do not want it to be one of the easiest places to commit crime, especially burglary. There have been offences of burglary committed this year where the offenders who have been arrested have travelled from other parts of the country to commit these types of crimes. The crimes are always investigated but may I stress I also need the help of the public to try and prevent the crimes from happening in the first place.

“There is nothing more heart-rending than meeting a victim of crime who has lost something precious, sentimental or loved, especially if it could have been prevented.

“We all take our jobs extremely seriously; knowing your home has been entered whether by force or sneak-in, can have a devastating effect on a person’s confidence in that home. If people could try to remember a few practical security suggestions to keep their car and home safe and secure, this could help prevent them being a victim of crime.

“As part of my role I also have a dedicated team, the ‘Integrated Offender Management team’ (IOM for short) who work with our ‘most prolific’ offenders dealing with their offending behaviour and supporting them to prevent them from re-offending.

“Since the beginning of 2013, I am pleased to say many of the people who have worked with us have left behind their previous life of crime with some people now being in employment, many have engaged with drug treatment plans and have moved to different locations to prevent temptation of returning to a life of criminality, some however, those who chose not to engage with my IOM team and did return to criminality, have been arrested and brought to justice.”
