A weakened Beverley Town clinched a vital three Humber Premier League points as they beat Sculcoates Amateurs.
Captain Michael O’Connell who got the winning goal from the spot said;
“This was a very tough game against excellent opponents, which could have gone either way.”
“We kept going till the end as usual and got our reward with a late penalty.”
Things could have been so different, with the scores level at half time Andrew Stott burst through to finish smartly as Town restored their lead.
Within minutes of the restart, Sculcoates were awarded when player manager Dave Ricardo gave away a needless fowl in his own box, O’Connell said;
“We should have closed the game out at 2-1 but Ricardo’s ‘moment of madness’ forced us to go looking for another goal.”
Ricardo, reflecting on the challenge that led to the penalty said;
“I dived in order to block the shot, but he squared rather than shot. I was left looking silly.”
He was, however, very happy with result saying;
“It was a good even game which we knew it would be. I am really proud of the lads getting a result when we were missing so many players.”
Victory leaves Town three points behind the current leaders Reckitts AFC. The sides meet next Saturday at the Norwood Recreation Ground.
A win for Beverley will see them move top with two games in hand putting them in the driving seat as they look to retain their title.
