MATCH REPORT: Beverley Town Vs Reckitts AFC

The top two teams in the Humber Premier League went head to head with second placed Beverley hoping to close the gap on Reckitts, who went into the game with a three-point cushion.

Town welcomed back Jonny Ricardo and Ben Thomson from injury, but we’re still without Rob Northen, Matty Start and Jamie Forester due to work and representative commitments.

It was Reckitts who started the brighter with strikers Simon Spencer and Jamie Bradshaw leading the line well.

Reckitts who took the lead after some sloppy defending, a simple throw in was not dealt with, and the cross came into the box far too easily.

Town qoalkeeper Adam Nicholson misjudged the flight of the ball, but managed to recover initially to catch it, but as he landed his momentum led him to drop the ball straight at the feet of Gareth Barstow, who tapped the ball in from a yard.

Beverley were lacking any real fluency, and the front two of Daniel Kingsley and Jamie Waltham were being well marshalled by the league leader’s defence.

Slowly, Town started to edge their way into the cup, but a couple of opportunities from Mike O’Connell were blazed over.

They had a great chance to equalise when the ball dropped to top scorer Andrew Stott, but he pulled his shot wide of the post, as Reckitts comfortably kept the champions out until halftime.

Town came out for the second half and played with much more purpose, and began to push Reckitts back into their own half.

Well led by Ricardo and Dane Mortimer, they managed to squeeze the play up the pitch, with Stott starting to become more of a threat, but on numerous occasions, the final ball lacked any real quality.

It was Asa Pardoe, who was arguably Beverley’s biggest attacking threat from right back, hit a sweet left volley, but this produced a fantastic save from Reckitts goalkeeper Tom Nicholson.

Beverley were now pushing forward, but this left space for Reckitts on the break, and they had a great shot on the half-volley from the edge of the box, was headed of the line by James Whittingham.

As Town pushed for a late equaliser, player manager Dave Ricardo had an opportunity from a free kick, but he could not keep his shot down, and the ball sailed over the bar.

The defeat means Town has lost their long unbeaten home league record, but in truth, their play in possession needs much improvement.

There was a lack of movement and options at times in the final third though this takes nothing away from Reckitts, who defended resolutely to see the game out.
