Trading standards officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council are warning shoppers to be on the alert for fake and dangerous goods, after removing items from shops.
In the last few weeks the officers have taken away a large quantity of cushions which were a fire risk and advent trains that were a choking hazard to young children.
As the Christmas shopping frenzy gathers pace, the officers are warning shoppers to be wary of cheap goods that come on the market at this time of year, but which may be dangerous.
Paul Bellotti, head of public protection, said: “The temptation is there for all of us to buy something if it looks like a real bargain. All too often it isn’t. Worse, it could present a risk to safety.”
“It is not possible for the officers to check every shop and outlet in the East Riding so it is vital that residents follow a few simple tips to ensure they stay safe.”
Trading standards offers a few tips:
- Ensure all toys and electrical goods are marked with a CE mark.
- Ensure Christmas presents for children are free from sharp edges and have no parts that can become detached.
- Buy from outlets that you know will be there after Christmas if you have to return a product.
- When buying online ensure the website is displays telephone and postal contact details in the UK.
- Deal only with secure websites that have the padlock symbol in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
