The Beverley Braves played host to top team West Hull in the second of two pre season matches.
After a heavy defeat a week earlier at the West Hull ground and four key players missing from the squad through injury, the odds were stacked against the home side. The rain was heavy and tested all of the player’s fitness and resilience.
The Braves had only one sub but were stunning in their commitment. The game started as it had done the previous week with West Hull scoring down the left wing within the first few minutes but the Braves this time were undeterred and totally focused. They battled hard and held their nerve and strong play from all on the pitch held the visitors back with great tackles and defence to keep the score nil – 4 at half time.
Owen Harrison another key player picked up an injury so the Braves were down to the bear 13. West’s brought on fresh legs and capitalised with an excellent try within minutes of the restart. Another followed and spectators would have been forgiven to think that Beverley’s tired legs would crumble in the second half but this was not the case. Every player on the pitch dug deep and used all of their energy to hold the quality side back.
A great game to watch under atrocious conditions saw skilful play and handling of the ball. As the last few minutes approached it was the Braves putting pressure on the visitor’s line. A fantastic offload close to the white wash by man of the match and debutant Joe Mankel was expertly caught by Harry Inman who used all his strength to power over and closed the match with a great try.
