A tiny bit of paper could be worth thousands of pounds according Hawleys Auctioneers.
The Beverley based auction house has been given a collection of stamps to sell and one in particular has caught the eye of the experts at Hawleys.
Although they get a lot of collections this one has a stamp from Jamaica that on closer inspection showed it to be a very rare item.
IN one of the albums there is a George VI Jamaica 5 shilling stamp that has a defect relating to the number or perforations on the edges, this has led to enquiries from collectors the world over.
John Hawley told HU17.net;
“We get a lot of collections of stamps but this one is unique and should sell for thousands of pounds. The value is all down the fact it has perforations missing. It is amazing what you find out about things in this job.”
It appears that back in 1940 the equipment used to make the stamps was bombed by the Germans and as a result of this a different machine was used to make 6,000 postal proofs that were shipped back to the colony.
Hawleys Auctioneers will sell the George VI Jamaica 5 shilling stamp along with the rest of the collection that includes a complete collection of the 138 mint 1948 Commonwealth Silver wedding stamps at Beverley Racecourse on February 9th.
Proceeds from the sale of the collection will be donated to St. Martins Hospice.
