On a lovely sunny morning Mill Lane United Wizards entertained Cottingham Rangers u12’s in their Myton League 1 clash, the first game both teams played this year.
Mill Lane United started strongly, despite playing into a head wind, but the Cottingham keeper kept the scores level with some fine saves.
With Matty Tomlinson, Harry Sadler and George Addison dominating in midfield, a slick passing move found Jamie Pettigrew on the right, and his pinpoint cross was expertly dispatched by Ben Gillyon as the keeper advanced making it 1- 0 to Mill Lane.
As the half wore on Cottingham had a spell of pressure and forced some corners, but the solid defence of Danny Wilson, Adam Prince and Zac Wise kept Cottingham at bay. The Wizards finished the half on the front foot, and another great chance came back off the underside of the cross bar as the half time whistle blew.
If the first half was a tight affair, the second was anything but and the Wizards cut loose and played some great football. Pettigrew created time and space in the box and lashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner for 2- 0 and this soon became three after an in swinging corner was headed home at the near post by Wise.
At 3 – 0 the game was over, but Cottingham continued to battle hard despite the onslaught. The impressive Lloyd Bean made it 4 with a cool finish when put clean through on goal and then as the Cottingham keeper parried Tomlinson was on hand with a neat finish to make it 5-0.
The hardworking Jacko Towse found Matty Blake, and his close-range shot made it 6 before Blake again with some great skill in the box, dinked the ball to the far post where Pettigrew headed the ball home to make the final score 7:0.
It was a great all-round team performance from the Wizards, but man of the match awards went to Pettigrew and Wise.
