SSAFA East Yorkshire will once again be hosting an Armed Forces Day in Beverley as the town continues to show their ongoing support for the armed forces.
Building on the success of previous years Beverley Armed Forces Day will be held in Saturday Market Place on Sunday 6th July and will also commemorate two other key military anniversary’s.
Event organiser David Elvidge said;
“I have given much thought to our 2014 event and have consulted with colleagues and veterans on what would be deemed in their eyes appropriate for our event, in this the year we commemorate not only the Centenary of The First World War but also the 70th anniversary of D Day.”
Beverley Armed Forces Day takes place exactly 100 years on from the ‘July Crisis’ which was a political situation over territory between the powers in Europe during the early 1900s.
David added;
“Indeed on Sunday 6th July we will look back 100 years on the day Germany delivered to Austria-Hungary ‘The Blank Cheque’ an assurance of support that many believe provoked the war which would come only weeks later.”
“Whilst seventy years ago, we will remember that the allies were fighting around Caen and were breaking out of the Normandy beachhead.”
As in previous years when local people and businesses have given their support, organisers are appealing for anyone wishing to offer their support to the day to come forward, David said;
“To ensure this day is a fitting tribute to those who have gone before us we would like to ask if any would like to sponsor the event.”
This year’s event will start with a parade and drum head service at midday. There will be vehicle and equipment displays and the day’s finale will be a classical experience with an open air concert from 6pm till 8pm.
