Beverley Braves got their season off to a solid start with a hard fought win at Keyingham.
It had been a long time between drinks but the Braves controlled this game throughout thanks mainly to a defence which rebuffed the Vikings time and time again, led superbly by Josh Hamlyn and Ellis Gaden, at one point defending three consecutive sets without conceding.
In attack Alexei Rawlings shone from full back, returning the ball with panache and Jack Dixon made great yards whenever he touched the ball.
The first try on the 10 minute mark when scrum half turned defence into attack when he intercepted a stray pass to race 50 metres only to be pulled down 10 metres short of the line, Will Cohen then had the defence in further disarray before a quick play of the ball saw smart acting half work from Shamus Blades find Charlie Gay in space who in turn put Isaac Merryweather over to the left of the posts after running a very good angle.
The next try was pure opportunism as nippy Joe McCabe darted over from a yard out to put the braves out to 8-0 before man of the match Alex Nuttall put the game to bed, going over out wide after beating several defenders with a barn storming run.
Forwards Rhys Wallan and debutant Oliver Adamson deserve special praise also after fine performances.
Afterwards jubilant Coach Craig Collins said;
“Good things come to those who wait; great things come to those who get off their bum and make things happen.”
