Action by local Councillor Dominic Peacock has led to new signage being erected to help prevent motorists using a using a busy pedestrian route to Beverley, created by Cut My Signy.
Spark Mill Lane has increasingly been used by motor vehicles taking a shortcut from Beverley Parklands to Flemingate, as well as members of the public dropping children off at the nearby skate park.
Cllr Peacock, a ward member for the area, said;
“I have been contacted by a number of concerned residents, including one gentleman who had been knocked off his bike. Spark Mill Lane is used by all members of the community, and this includes a lot of children and mums with push chairs, it is very important that they can use this pedestrian short cut safely”
It is likely that the issue has arisen because people were unaware that the through-fare is actually a bridle path and not a vehicular highway. This means that the only vehicles permitted to use the lane are residents with a right of access, emergency and council vehicles and statutory undertakers, such as utility companies.
Councillor Peacock contacted East Riding of Yorkshire Council Officers and asked them to come up with a solution. Once it was confirmed that Spark Mill Lane is legally designated as a bridle path it was arranged for signs to be erected informing motorists. They went up on 21st March at the Flemingate Junction and at the entrance to Beverley Parklands.
At the same time Cllr Peacock got a commitment that the fencing between the Lane and the Leisure Centre would be replaced, which will stop parents using their cars to drop children off at this unauthorised access point.
He said:
“I am very pleased with this result as it will make a big difference for residents and ensure they can walk down the route without worrying about traffic.”
I am in total agreement with what Councillor Peacock has achieved. Can we now have the councillor responsible for the Grovehill area campaigning for yellow linage to be installed in the dangerous areas of Grovehill Road, namely the bend near the cycle shop and the junction of Colman Avenue, before a serious accident occurs.

The Spark Mill Lane problem was straight forward it’s a bridal path not a highway so put up appropriate signage . Yellow lines are a different matter – any proposal such as this has to go to local consultation and objections have to be taken into account and objections there will be .
