Local Laura Whiting put herself through the pain barrier as she completed her first ever Triathlon.
Laura, who is a third year student took on the event overcoming the odds and raised £800 for the Hull based charity Special Times.
The event that took place in South Hunsley earlier in the month was made up a 400m swim, 25k bike ride and 5k run, a challenge to even the fittest person.
Laura who had no previous experience of such gruelling events told HU17.net;
“As I had never done an event like this before I needed some training . I was already a member at Phoenix Gym in Beverley and they were so friendly and helpful in getting me in shape.”
“After telling them about it when I signed up to the event in December, they were very keep to help me train.”
“They designed me plans and trained with me, doing spinning classes, strength conditioning circuits, weight training, running, amongst lots of others things.”
“Prior to training for the event I could not swim well at all so had to get lessons at the Beverley Leisure Centre.”
Currently in her third year of a Learning Disability Nursing degree at Hull University, Laura admits at times things were hard but when going got tough the gym were there to help her through.
“The gym helped me massively, very supportive and always there when I was struggling.” Said Laura.
Special Times the charity who Laura was raising money for work to support adults and children with special needs. They help organise after school clubs, excursions and family events.
She said;
“I am very passionate about raising money for this special client group which is why I chose them.”
She finished the course in 2hours 12mins, when asked if she would be tackling another Triathlon Laura said yes and will hopefully looking to beat her time.
