The normally-inaccessible north tower of Beverley Minster has a rare opening day on Bank Holiday Monday (26th May) – and it’s a special family-friendly treat too. Accompanied children under 16 will go free.
The Minster’s 50 metre (165 foot) tall north tower is usually out of bounds to visitors – except on August Bank Holiday – but popular demand to see the best views of East Yorkshire you can have without a helicopter has led Minster staff to arrange an extra day.
Head Virger John Dell said:
“Our annual open days on August Bank Holidays are always popular, but a lot of people have told us they can’t make that particular day. So this year we’re catering for them by opening on Spring Bank Holiday as well.”
The guided tours, which will begin at 10.30am, 11.30, 2pm and 3pm, plus additional times if required will also include view the tympanum – which features 19th century workers’ graffiti – and the 110-year old clock mechanism that drives the Minster’s clock and chimes.
The cost is £10 per adult, with accompanied under 16s free.
This tour is not for the faint-hearted: there are 208 steps to the top and the final part of the climb is in a dark and confined space.
