East Yorkshire Children Mark 100th Anniversary Of World War One With Coletta & Tyson

Children in East Yorkshire enjoyed the opportunity to plant poppy seeds to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One.

Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre invited primary school children from across the region to the centre in Woodmansey to learn more about poppies and raise awareness about the occasion.

The centre provided both horticultural and historical learning about the significance of poppies and the reason why they are used to mark Remembrance Day each year.

Paul Tyson, of Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre, said: “As a centre, we wanted to mark the centenary of World War One by doing some that will hopefully leave a lasting legacy in our local community.

“We decided to work with a local school to develop children’s understanding of the importance of poppies and what they signify.”

Children at Woodmansey Primary School were the first in the region to take part.

Mr Tyson said: “We are delighted that Woodmansey Primary School agreed to be the first school to take part in this series of events and we are looking forward to meeting the children and commemorating a special occasion.”

Around 30 Year 6 pupils at Woodmansey primary visited Coletta & Tyson on June 12. The morning workshop included a detailed explanation of how to plant and care for poppies, a talk about why the plants are important, a tour of the recently expanded garden centre and a ‘spot the poppy’ game and garden centre quiz.

Evelyn Green, head teacher at Woodmansey Primary School, said: “Our topic this term is ‘Before I was born’ and the children have been learning about World War One and World War Two.

“They really enjoyed visiting Coletta & Tyson and planting the poppy seeds. It is good that a local business wants to get involved with children on projects like this as it brings to life the learning and gives it meaning. It also gives the children the opportunity to find out what happens in the workplace.”
