Same Welburn says his side did very well as Beverley Town Cricket Club 3rd XI beat South Holderness at the Norwood Recreation Ground by 3 wickets to claim all 30 championship points.
This was the first of three massive games for his side and the win sets them up nicely for the next two fixtures which will be a real test for his team.
Speaking after the game Welburn said;
“Saturday was the first of the three biggest games we play this season, coming up we’ve got the only two teams above us in the league but we knew we’d always have a fight on our hands against South Holderness.”
Beverley bowled first and after a slow start the wickets started to tumble quickly and change the game completely as South Holderness were reduced to 86 for 6.
Neil Graham and Welburn bowled economical spells taking 3 for 40 and 2 for 40 respectively while Matty Saint claimed 2 for 16 from seven over’s.
Rich Riley (3-23) returned to remove two lower order batsmen leaving South Holderness 136 all out in 42.5 over’s.
Commenting on the bowling by his side the skipper said;
“I thought we did very well to restrict them to 139 but yet again we faltered at the top of the batting order.”
In contrast to the Town opening over’s the Hedon bowlers reeled off five maidens to set the tone for what was to be an interesting run chase until livened up by the big-hitting Riley.
At 18 for 2 and 43 for 3 Town were still in the game but the batsmen struggled to impose themselves, several reaching double figures but failing to move on.
Alex Nightingale, batting with increased composure each week, remained at the crease but Riley’s impact was almost immediate.
He took 24 from one over and 17 from another, with a number of sixes included, to put Town in complete control before falling for a rapid 49.
Nightingale anchored the innings with his excellent unbeaten 38 and despite two late wickets falling Town recorded a winning 139 for 7 in the fortieth over.
Welburn said;
“Nightingale has moved up to the second highest run scorer in the team this year and I don’t think he quite gets the credit he deserves.”
“Rich Riley came in and turned the game around in two over’s, he’s great to watch with the bat and it’s great to see his bowling improving as well.”
“We play Sutton at Norwood next week and Cottingham away the following Saturday. The team know they are good enough to win both games and if we’re able to put out a strong side then there’s no reason why we can’t go on and get promotion.”
