Prudent financial management and an excellent track record for delivery have helped East Riding of Yorkshire Council secure funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to deliver much-needed new affordable housing in areas of identified need.
The council has secured £3.275m, which will allow 131 new affordable houses to be provided over a three year period, from 2015-2018.
This includes funding to purchase and repair 75 properties and to bring 10 empty properties back into use as affordable housing. In terms of the new build element of this scheme, planning approval will be required and consultation on such matters will take place as and when required.
Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for housing, environment and planning, welcomed the announcement, saying:
“This is recognition that the council is not only committed to meeting the need for new affordable housing, but is also a trusted partner which can be relied upon to deliver such housing to agreed deadlines.
“This is a boost to those in need of housing in the area and to the local economy through the jobs and training opportunities that such projects involve.”
As well as 75 properties being improved across the area, the programme will see properties built at a number of locations in the East Riding, subject to planning approval, including:
- 14 units in Burden Road, Beverley
- Six units in Forty Steps, Anlaby
- Three units in Kirk Drive, Kirk Ella
- Three units in Greenwood Avenue, Beverley
The council will continue to work closely with the Homes and Communities Agency to attract further funding over and beyond the current investment period and will use its own resources to support such development.
Over the past four years more than 400 new affordable houses have been provided in the East Riding using this source of funding.
