Having watched them empty the Burton men’s wear shop and remove all the fittings it felt a little odd to see such a large empty unit in the middle of Beverley.
There are rumours that what used to once be a clothing shop for men will become a coffee shop of some description, but from what I saw the sign clearly said it was still available.
Beverley Town centre is seeing an increase of empty units, just across from Burton’s the dry cleaners Johnston’s were emptying their unit, which has now ceased to trade in Beverley as they relocate all their operations to Clough Road in Hull.
Around Saturday Market more shops and units stand empty, and if the signage in the windows are anything to go by there are more set to follow them.
With work at the Flemmingate site under way and plans to offer more out of town shopping in Beverley at Grove Hill, you do have to wonder if over the coming months and years more and more units will become vacant.
Of course, businesses come and go, just looking through the ‘Modern History’ archive on HU17 reveals a number of shops and businesses that used to grace the town centre.
Khans of Beverley, Emilio’s, The Fairy Godmothers, CC Outdoors, Little One Nursery Store, The Princess and the Pea and Pumblechooks Deli & Scones are just some of the names who pop up.
For me, however, the place I miss the most is Game Invader, from the day it opened until the day, it closed a week never passed by when I would not go in and buy a handful of games for ten quid as I looked to rack up my Xbox gamer points.
Thanks to my relationship with the owner when big titles were released, I would get them a day early, something you just don’t get with online shopping or from the major chains.
There have of course been some very welcome additions to the shopping offers in Beverley, Jennings Computers is certainly proving very useful to me as a provider of Apple Products.
It’s amazing to think how much the high street in Beverley has changed is less than 10 years and when you look closely it is quite remarkable that the likes of Briggs and Powell still remain a fundamental part of the high street.
Next big shop to empty in Market Place is Fawcett and Abrahams .They close at end of September I think .We certainly have an abundance of coffee shops and places to eat in Beverley now…we are lacking in mens and children’s stores especially toy shops .I remember the fabulous toy shop in Wednesday market which is now The Beehive( was Casa/fusion bar …)
The problem is rent is too much, they have just spent millions on the market place
And then there going to open the new hodgsons developement, which will take
Shoppers away from the town centre , same as st Stephens did to princess quey,
The council have no idea what there doing, and with all the new houses build, all sewage and drawing bring filled in, we’re will it go, it will just flood , Beverley is fast becoming like everywhere else in the country , as most shops are big chains, so you may as well be stood in any town in the uk!
