A £1.6m scheme to improve Swinemoor Lane, Beverley will start this month and continue until spring 2015, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced.
The project will see the full length of Swinemoor Lane reconstructed and improved from Swinemoor Roundabout through to the Grovehill Junction.
Improvement works include right turn lanes, formal parking bays, improved cycle routes and off-line bus bays to improve traffic capacity on the route in advance of the Beverley Southern Relief Road opening.
The road will also be repaired and resurfaced with a low-noise material and all ironwork, such as manhole covers and gullies, will be replaced or adjusted to suit the finished surface in order to reduce road and tyre noise for local residents.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby said: “I am very pleased that we are able to fund these much needed works, which will greatly improve Swinemoor Lane for all road users.
“The scheme has been made possible thanks to the prudent financial management of this council and has been devised after extensive consultation with local residents, businesses, and the local bus company.”
The council strongly advises that through travellers should use alternative routes, where possible, from Monday 8 September as works will be taking place under convoyed traffic control which is expected to cause delays.
To minimise the impact on morning commuter traffic, working hours will be from 9.30am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. Businesses along the route will be open as usual and access will be maintained to the hospital and residential properties.
Some weekend or night working may also be required, but this will be kept to a minimum to reduce the impact on businesses and residents.
The council’s Beverley Integrated Transport Plan contractor will start work at each end of the lane on Monday 8 September with alterations to the A1035 Roundabout and the completion of Grovehill Junction alterations.
Additionally, during this first phase, statutory undertakers will be diverting services. Tree and hedge removal will start, and street lighting columns will be moved, which will then allow the main Swinemoor Lane works to start.
The council has reached an agreement, in principle, with some of the adjacent landowners about the transfer or purchase of small areas of land, which are needed for the scheme to take place.
Agreement has also been reached with the Defence School of Transport (DST) Leconfield to re-route and re-time vehicle movements during the works.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson added: “As with any major road improvement scheme, there will be disruption during the works, but the project will be scheduled in such a way that this will be kept to an absolute minimum.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by these works, but can promise that Swinemoor Lane will be much improved with the completion of this scheme.”
I welcome the up grade to the road , I wonder if that upgrade involves the council upgrading the trees and shrubs along the council area of Swinemoor lane and the private owned area of swinemoor lane …..a lane of 2 halfs !!!!
