First World War historians visit the Treasure House – the untold story of those who didn’t believe in war.
Beverley Treasure House is hosting a pair of talks about conscientious objection during the First World War. They continue the series of events taking place at the Treasure House, marking the outbreak of the First World War.
David Boulton will be talking about the topic of his recently republished book ‘Objection Overruled: Conscription and Conscience in the First World War’. His talk is on Thursday, 2 October at 6. 30pm.
David is a Quaker and a Humanist. He was the former head of news and current affairs at Granada TV and was editor of the investigative programme ‘World in Action’. He has published many books and has written for many journals and newspapers, including ‘The Guardian’, ‘The Observer’ and the ‘New Internationalist’.
Cyril Pearce is talking about his work into conscientious objection and his register of British conscientious objectors. His talk will take place on Tuesday, 7 October and will refer to conscientious objection in Yorkshire.
Cyril is a retired senior lecturer from Leeds University and this year he has republished his book ‘Comrades in Conscience: The Story of an English Community’s Opposition to the Great War’.
Talks take place on Thursday 2 and Tuesday 7 October both begin at 6.30pm at the Treasure House on Champney Road, Beverley.
