Beverley & District Chrysanthemum Society Appeal For New Members

Beverley & District Chrysanthemum Society Appeal For New Members

Beverley & District Chrysanthemum Society committee member Phillip Matthews is appealing for volunteers to step forward and join them.

Stepped in history the Beverley & District Chrysanthemum Society is facing a possible end to over 100 years of being in existence if they cannot attract new members to their ranks.

Phil who has been a member himself for a year and keeps an allotment at Kitchen Lane in Beverley told HU17.net;

“Beverley & District Chrysanthemum Society is made up of volunteers who get together various times of the year.”

“Our main aim as a society is to hold the district shows, one early show held in September which is in its 66th year and another late show in November that is in its 109th year.”

“These shows encourage people with a love of gardening to show off their specimen produce be it flowers, fruit or vegetables.”

“Over time cookery, baking,  photography and children’s classes have also been added to attract the younger audience to come and have a go.”

Phil is keen to point out that the society is not exclusively for best growers in the town, he added;

“It’s not all expert growers that come to the show, we have seen many more novices starting to enter.”

“The society depends on its volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors to keep going but with many of the committee due to retire they are looking for some new, possibly young blood to step up and keep this historic society going.”
