Around 60 Royal Marines Commandos marched through the centre of Beverley while completing a 9 mile booted run.
A team comprising of Royal Marines, both permanent staff and students who are currently undergoing driver training courses locally at the Defence School of Transport replicated a speed march that all Marines undertake during their basic training in order to gain their coveted Green Beret.
On their arrival in Beverley, they were met by members of the public and local firefighters from Humberside Fire & Rescue service.
Placing the famous Green Beret on their heads they then marched from Saturday Market through the centre of Beverley along Toll Gavel to Wednesday Market where they were met by the Cllr Pat O’Neil, Chairman of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Councillor O’Neil said;
“I was delighted to welcome the Royal Marines into Beverley today and to support them in raising public awareness of the Royal Marines’ Charitable Trust Fund. I wish them well with their future endeavours as part of their 350th Anniversary celebrations.”
On returning to the school the Royal Marines were met by the Commandant, Colonel Rob Peacock who congratulated them on their efforts and a toast to the Royal Marine Corps followed.
OC Special Training Division, Major Mark Winstanley said;
“I would just like to say how proud and grateful I am of the people of Beverley. The aim of today’s 9 mile Booted run was to involve all the Marines at the Defence School of Transport in this years Royal Marine 350th birthday celebrations, raise funds for the Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund and raise awareness of the Royal Marines in the local community.”
“From the feedback I have already received and from the welcome we received around the whole route, including the local Fire Brigade who lined the route, I can honestly say it has been an overwhelming success. I would like to pass on my personal thanks to the local council for allowing the event to happen & for Councillor Pat O’Neil for meeting us at the half way point.”
“Also a massive thank you must go to the local Police for their cooperation and time, ensuring the event went off seamlessly.”
Their run is just one of many events the Royal Marines are completing as they mark their 350th anniversary.
One of the goals of the march was to raise awareness and funds for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund that provides a better quality of life to serving and retired Royal Marines and their families.
