Sleepers is a new bar & restaurant that has opened on the corner or Norwood, and yesterday I went to see what all the fuss was about.
Having opened this week the latest venue in Beverley seems to already to be hit with the locals and bar a few early teething problems the overall feedback I got from those who have already been was that this is great addition to the town.
Looking through the menu, there was plenty of choice, for the veggies. The menu had a very good selection of suitable dishes, and the same could be said for those who like Gluten-free food.
For me, however, I opted for what I always eat, a burger. Seeing how I was in Sleepers, I thought it be fair to go for their Sleepers Burger. I ordered my burger at 8.30pm and 20 minutes later, it arrived at the table. It cost £10.
It seems to be the way these days with most places that food arrives on chopping boards in contrast to plates. Personally, I prefer a plate, but I was not going to let the fact that the Sleepers Burger arrived on a chopping board stop me from enjoying my meal.
With the burger, I got some chips, which were in what I can only describe as a mini metal bucket, and some coleslaw. Of course, it looked really good with lots of care put into the presentation of my meal and the lady who fetched the meal over was very polite offering to get me things like salt and cutlery.
The meal itself was nice. The burger was well cooked. It was topped with two slices of crispy bacon, mayo, gherkins and some cheese. The roll was nice and soft, but you really did need to eat this with a knife and fork.
As I began to dismantle the burger, working my way through the layers, I was disappointed about two things. The first was there was no onion. I know most places do not add this but at the point of sale it would be nice if this was pointed out and so that is could be added.
My second issue came when I lifted the lettuce leaves to discover that whoever had made it put the root of the lettuce into my burger. OK you can eat this, but it looked like it should have been put in a compost bin and not into someone’s meal.
The chips that came with the food were lovely. They had some sort of seasoning on them that gave them a kick but there was just the right amount of chips, and they were very tasty indeed.
Overall, including a pint of beer, the meal set me back £13.50, which was not too bad at all. The venue was very nice with the right balance of music and ambiance noise. There are some things that still need to be sorted out; the bathrooms do not reflect the rest of the venue, but I am sure that over time this will be fixed by the owners.
What Beverley has gained through Sleepers is a fantastic place; it is modern and with places like the Rose & Crown, The Beehive, Farthings we are starting to build up some very smart places to go out – the sorts of places you traditionally find in York and London.
They have clearly thought about families too. The children’s menu offered meals for youngsters from just £4 which I thought was very good value for money.
Sadly, there is no table service, all your ordering and getting a second drink require you to get up and go to bar with your table number. Yes, they bring the food to the table, but it stops there, hardly a big deal. But if you go in with your children, it may mean leaving them on their own while you place your order.
The venue inside is amazing. They have done a cracking job with the deccoration and blend of tables, counters and soft seating give it a really cosy feel.
Overall if I was to sum up my experience of Sleepers I would say – cracking venue, decent food and good service.
