Donations from people in Beverley and the surrounding villages to the Poppy Appeal have totalled over £39,000, smashing last year’s total.
Rod Evans, the joint Poppy Appeal Organiser for the area, also thinks that figure could rise. Speaking to HU17.net he said;
“At the moment we are still counting, but I can confirm we have blown last year’s amount out of the water with this figure.”
“We still have a few tins to collect and count but we are staggered at the amount people from the area have donated to the charity.”
Rod feels the increase has been helped by the media coverage and the fact that this year marks 100 years since the start of World War I.
He said;
“The Poppy Appeal is an all-year-round event. During Remebrancetide, the two week period leading up to and including Remembrance Sunday, people have excelled themselves, for which everyone involved with the charity is very grateful.”
“As always the a staff at Barclays Bank have been fantastic, helping us to get the money banked so it can be put to good use.”
“We would also like to thank supermarkets Aldi, Tesco and Morrisions for allowing us to collect in their stores. The staff at all of these places have been phenomenal.”
“The Commemoration of the start of WWI has certainly helped raise the profile as we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can all enjoy the freedoms we have today.”
“This year’s appeal officially ends in June 2015 so we are very confident that this number will continue to rise.”
The Poppy Appeal had around 200 hundred collection tins at various locations around Beverley and villages including Tickton he said;
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made a donation, collected or allowed us to put a collection tin in their premises. Without them, none of this would be possible.”
