Poor Start Leaves Town Too Much To Do As They Are Dumped Out Of The Cup

Beverley Town FC were knocked out of the Whiteheads Fish And Chips League Cup after they were beaten by Wawne United.

Town set themselves a difficult challenge in this game by giving Wawne a four goals start and allowing themselves an hour to turn it round but they came very close to surmounting it.

In the first 30 minutes of the match, Town were at sixes and sevens as they failed to keep the ball, defended poorly and were soundly punished as Wawne went cruised to 4-0 lead.

The pick of the goals being a 30 yard free kick bent round the wall which debutant keeper Morris could not get enough on.

Manager Ross Cording made a substitution, changed formation and demanded his side kept the ball better.

The game went from end to end as town struggled to find the final quality ball to get them back in the game. In the final five minutes of the half, two incidents occurred which saw Town get a foot in the game.

Firstly, Morris produced a fine save from a one on one situation and then at the other end the tireless Ryan Hirst pulled one back after a shot was blocked.

In the second half there was an ebb and flow to the game as both sides looked likely to score. As the half wore on and United tired, Town came back into it as Lee Conroy got in front of his marker at a corner and headed home.

With fifteen minutes left, Jamie Cording caught the keeper out on his near post to make it three.

Town continued to press looking for the equaliser when United’s Adam Foster was guilty missing a great chance to make the game safe for the home side.

with minutes left, Town had a couple of crosses which failed to find a finish, Jordan Organ coming closet clipping the outside of the post with a shot.

Commenting on the game Cording said;

A very good game from a spectators point of view but town will rue giving the opposition such an easy start to the game even though they staged a courageous comeback.

This weekend Beverley Town travel to Bridlington as they return to Humber Premier League action.
