Chequers Owner Ian Allott Says He Was Surprised To Best Bar None An Award

Chequers Micro Pub owner Ian Allott said he never thought  his pub would win anything at the Best Bar None Awards.

Ian opened Chequers Micro Pub in Swabys Yard back in June 2013 and since then his idea has proved to be a massive success in the town.

When he opened, Ian described his new pub as an ongoing real ale festival and that concept has certainly helped to win him a good set of regulars.

At Beverley Racecourse Ian and his team were rewarded for their work, scooping a new award that organisers had to create to fit this new style of pub.

Speaking to HU17.net about winning an award for Best New Entrant Ian said;

“I never expected to win as we do not fall into a bar category or a pub category. So I was certainly not expecting anything on the night.”

“I had been tipped the wink there was going to some sort of award. Everyone got an accreditation so I thought that was it.”

“The fact is, organisers created an award for Best New Entrant so my pub could fit into something. There was nothing in place for them to mark us on the things we do.”

“At Chequers Micro Pub we don’t do Wi-Fi, we don’t entertainers, we don’t do hot food or anything technological, which is what a lot of the venues were judged on.”

“Everything they could mark us on we were marked highly. There were so many categories, but we fell outside of them all together.”

“It was a real surprise to win but what I was really chuffed about was all the other licensees from Beverley came over and congratulated us. They told us we deserved it as we are doing something different in Beverley.”

“The Council said it was a special award because we were different – so effectively it’s an award for being special and different!”
