Good Karma Goes To The Dogs This Christmas

Good Karma Goes To The Dogs This Christmas

Jewellery business Karma Feeling is spreading some festive cheer this season by helping Oakwood, the dog rescue centre, raise awareness, of the major responsibility that comes with owning a dog prior to the Christmas rush.

For every bracelet sold as part of their #CanineKarma campaign, Gaynor Osborne-Lawn owner of Karma Feeling will donate £5 to the rescue centre, making these bracelets the festive gift that keeps on giving.

The aim of the Canine Karma campaign is to encourage people to thoroughly research the responsibilities of dog ownership before purchasing an animal as a surprise gift. Gaynor uses the rescue centre’s doggy day care services and knows first hand, the fantastic job done at the centre and how much love they have for our four legged friends.

Gaynor says: “We’re all familiar with the saying “a dog is for life…”. Those planning to buy a dog as a gift this year need to understand that these creatures require constant care and attention. With our Canine Karma campaign we hope to create awareness of the situation and to raise plenty of funds for Oakwood, one of the many dog rescue centres in the area that will particularly be feeling the strain in the new year.”

“Oakwood Dog Rescue rehabilitates and re-homes dogs to loving homes, where they can live out the rest of their years in a happy, loving environment. The charity is privately funded and receives no government or large scale support. The generosity of the public is the only reason the rescue can continue to function. It costs around £8k per month to run the centre. To raise this money, fundraising events are held every weekend. Currently there are no surplus funds, and the centre is operating on a month by month basis.”

Studies by the Animal Rights Action group show that in the UK alone, the number of dogs abandoned each year is estimated to be as high as 130,000. Approximately one adoptable, healthy dog or puppy is put to death every hour in the UK due to not finding a home.

Oakwood Dog Rescue was set up in 2009, initially to support people who could no longer take care of their dogs for whatever reason. The not for profit organisation has since grown, and now rescues dogs from all over the UK. Founder, Gill Williams and her team work tirelessly to provide shelter, assessments and re-home as many dogs as possible.

Gill says: “Dog abandonment has been on the increase for years, particularly after the Christmas period, there is still a huge problem of people not acknowledging the responsibilities associated with becoming a pet owner. Unfortunately dog rescue centres all over the country become full to capacity following the Christmas season when the novelty of their new pet has worn off and the reality of a commitment comes to fruition.”

“It is a challenging time but we must continue to increase awareness of the situation prior to people making that commitment. The Canine Karma campaign is a great way to make people aware as they’re doing their Christmas shopping, as well as raise much needed funds to ensure that we can provide the best care for any pets affected by carelessness and neglect over the Christmas period.”

Karma Feeling has agreed to donate £5 from every bracelet and £10 from every set of rosary beads that are sold between now and the 22 December to the charity as part of the #CanineKarma campaign, that is currently rolling via social media. To make the donation customers must enter “Oakwood” in the order notes upon checkout and the company will handle the rest.
