ERYC To Lock Memorial Gardens Following Labour Intervention

Beverley Labour party is pleased to announce that, following the interventions of Town Mayor Councillor Paul McGrath and Councillor Margaret Pinder, East Riding of Yorkshire Council have now reconsidered the decision to no longer lock the Hengate Memorial Gardens and the Coronation Gardens in Beverley.

Although a council spokesperson had indicated this cost-cutting measure was to continue into the New Year, after public outcry at the threat this posed to the Cenotaph and other memorials, this decision now appears to have been rescinded and the gardens will once again be locked at night

Cllr Pinder, who is also Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Beverley and Holderness, welcomed the news.

The former Mayor of Beverley commenting on the decision to lock the respective gates she said;

“I am pleased that common sense has prevailed and the gardens and all they represent will now be protected.”

“The Hengate Garden in particular gave especial cause for concern both because of the importance of the memorials to Beverley’s war dead, but also because of the risk posed to St Mary’s which could easily be accessed at night from the wall at the rear.”

“This was a petty economy that should never have been considered. I ask residents to keep an eye on their local public spaces such as playgrounds and, if they feel they are not being properly protected, to report this to ERYC at once.”
