Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Pat O’Neil, said: “Christmas is the time for families and for children, it’s a time for reflection and renewal and a time when we realise that another year is coming to an end.
“I hope that many of you will enjoy this Christmas with your families, and that children can enjoy the day as all children should, but sadly, there are many for whom this time of year cannot be the same.
“I also think of all the men and women in the armed forces at this time who serve and protect our country throughout the year and will not be with their loved ones this Christmas.
“Separation at this time of year is especially hard to bear and I will be thinking also for those separated from loved ones, the elderly and vulnerable and all those facing the festive period alone.
“I hope this season ends on a joyful note and continues into a safe and successful New Year for you and your family.
“My message to you all is not to dwell on the past too much but to use this time of year to reflect on the good things in life that mean the most to you and to make the most of the year ahead.
“On behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
