Reducing Your Waste This Christmas In The East Riding

Brown Binsbin

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is reminding residents that more waste is thrown out during the festive season than any other, but that this year, recycling in the East Riding will be easier than ever before.

For the first time, bins across the whole East Riding will be emptied over the Christmas period, as all households are now on the council’s fortnightly collection service. There will be changes to collection dates over the period, shown on the calendars sent to every household in the area during December. Dates can also be checked on the council website : www.eastriding.gov.uk

Residents can also sign up to the free text reminder service which will send text messages the night before all bin collections. Details of how to sign up are on the calendars and on the website.

During the Christmas period last year, 5,840 tonnes of waste were collected in East Riding green bins; 2,900 in blue bins; and 1,920 in brown bins. In all, the council collected 1,156 tonnes of food waste, 926 in the green bins and 230 tonnes in the brown bins for composting.

Councillor Symon Fraser, said: “Over Christmas we generate about 30 per cent more waste than in the rest of the year, but the good news is that most of it can be recycled. Thanks to the magnificent efforts of East Riding residents, more waste is now being recycled than ever before.

“I would encourage residents to keep their festive waste to a minimum – there are many easy ways to do it. Let’s maintain our recent record recycling figures right through the festive season!”

Tips to reduce waste and recycle over Christmas include:

  • Remove bows and sticky tape from wrapping paper and put it in the blue bin –or save it for next year
  • Greeting cards – including those with glitter and other embellishments – can also be recycled in the blue bin
  • Take real Christmas trees that cannot be replanted to one of the ten local household waste recycling sites, or leave them out for collection next to the brown bin in January.
  • Put out for collection any recyclable waste which will not fit in to the blue bin, in white or clear plastic bags, or take it to a household waste recycling site.

There are many other tips for cutting waste – from sending e-cards to using reusable bags – on the council website: www.eastriding.gov.uk

The ten East Riding household waste recycling sites will be closed on New Year’s Day. They will close at 4pm on  New Year’s Eve, but otherwise will be open as normal between 10am and 5pm each day.

  1. 30% more waste yet council collections dramatically reduce at this time of year? Like that makes sense, our blue bin nearly full yet no collection for another two weeks! Well worth the £2000+pa in council tax we pay.
