Wizards Work Their Magic To Reach Cup Final

Mill Lane Wizards stormed into the final of the u13 cup after beating a previously unbeaten Scarborough team in what turned out to be a real battle at Walkington Playing Fields.

On a bright, sunny, but very windy morning Scarborough adapted to the conditions better than Mill Lane, creating 3 good chances only for the outstanding Adam Prince and the brilliance of Isaac Adnitt in goal keeping the scores level.

As the first half wore on the Wizards started to gain some momentum, dominating possession and creating some good chances of their own, and so it was no surprise when Mill Lane made the breakthrough.

Some combination play from the hard working Joe Douglas and Matty Blake put Jamie Pettigrew through on goal and as the keeper advanced his clever chip was converted by Ben Gillyon for 1:0. Despite some more half chances at either end the half finished with no further score.

Scarborough had a good early chance in the second half but their forward hit the side netting before a last ditch tackle from the impressive Zac Wise thwarted another good chance. At the other end the Wizards created some excellent openings as Lloyd Bean, George Addison and Pettigrew found the Scarborough keeper in fine form.

Mill Lane continued to impress, but it was Scarborough who levelled the scores with around 15 minutes to go. Another long ranging kick from their keeper was helped on and the Scarborough forward gave Adnitt no chance with a great finish in the bottom corner.

At 1:1 the match was in the balance but this galvanised the Wizards and with some brilliant defending from Edward Chappell and Danny Wilson and some inspired play from Harry Sadler, Mill Lane pressed for the winner.

With 10 minutes to go Sadler picked up a loose ball in midfield, danced through 3 tackles before feeding Douglas whose shot was blocked only for the industrious Gillyon to smash home the rebound putting the Wizards on the verge of the final.

Scarborough now played a more offensive formation looking for the equaliser but it was Mill Lane who scored again after a great counter attacking move.

Blake robbed the Scarborough player on half way, fed Sadler who put Gillyon clean through and his neat finish ended Scarborough’s hopes and put the Wizards in the final in April.
