Clergy and Church leaders from the local community have today visited the Defence School of Transport. Padre Andy Oliver who is new to the Defence School of Transports invited local ministers to the school, firstly to introduce himself and secondly, to raise the profile of military chaplains.
Padre Andy said:
“On so many occasions I’ve been asked, ‘what is it you do?’ This is my chance to inform local ministers of my role within the military and also provide them with a view of the training that takes place within Normandy Barracks.”
During the visit the group visited St Martins Church and the DST memorial. Following a short service they moved to a static vehicle display before climbing on board a BV206 and Foxhound armoured vehicle for a tour around the schools 26KM training area.
Reverend Val Clarke of Beverley Minster said:
“This had been an experience of a lifetime for me, I never would have thought that I would travel in a military vehicle or wear body armour and a helmet, the day has been wonderful.”
Reverend Gareth Atha, Assistant Curate at Beverley Minster said:
“The visit has been a valuable insight into what happens here and has highlighted to us all how important the role of Padre is to the staff and students at the Defence School of Transport. This ministry will be supported with much prayer on my part.”
