Hannah Burnitt the Community Champion at the ASDA Store in Beverley says the Maths Challenge is helping them build relationships with local people.

The scheme which has been running Beverley for around a year sees pupils from local schools come into the store and learn basic life skills using mathematics.

Speaking to HU17.net Hannah said;

“St Nicholas Primary School send us five or six pupils each month to take the Maths Challenge. They are given a theme by their teacher, in this case it was Pancake Party, and also a shopping budget of £40.”

“After planning their party together they then go around the store and shop for the items. While shopping they have to keep an eye on their spending to ensure they stick within the budget.”

“This project also gives the children a chance to understand how the store works. Once they have their goods, they get to use the checkout which is always their favourite part.”

Despite doing all the planning the children do not get to take the goods home. Despite this, Hannah says the children love taking the Maths Challenge!
