The Beverley Party Seek Candidates For May Elections

The Beverley Party are appealing to local people to come and stand int the May elections.

In a statement released by the all new party, that aims to put the interests of Beverley first they said;

“To be truly representative, The Beverley Party aims to field candidates from all parts of Beverley and walks of life.”

“The Beverley Party is for the people of Beverley and surrounding villages and we need strong representation on both the Beverley Town Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council by people who live and work here.”

“In particular, we are concerned that young people have been under-represented on both bodies to date. The current age profile for both councils is currently very much at the higher end of the spectrum, possibly because of a misconception that primarily retired people have the time to undertake this role.”

“Furthermore, individuals with special needs and minority groups are under-represented. Families with young children are under-represented. The list goes on.”

“The Beverley Party would like to see a more representative and more balanced membership on both councils.”

“People might be under the impression that being a councillor is a challenge beyond their means or ability – this impression is unfounded.”

“I know nothing about politics – There is training available on the job! More importantly, this is about Beverley and how to look after it, not Trident or the Common Agricultural Policy! If you care about our town, you are the right person for the job.”

“I left school at 16 and have no qualifications – An ability to communicate with others and listen is far more valuable. Our vision of a new kind of local governance is to move away from elitism; personal qualities like integrity should outweigh wealth, patronage or qualifications.”

“Will I have enough time to attend meetings? -Meetings for both councils take place every six weeks; the ERYC meetings are held in the day, the Town Council meets in the evening.”

“However, much of the work (communication, communication, communication) can be done from home. And if we get a fair number of young mothers/dads elected; what’s stopping us from setting up a crèche at County Hall?”

“Or have more of the ERYC meetings in the evening? If there is a will, there can be change. Let’s make it the kind of governance that works for our town.”

“Let’s take back our councils, let’s take back our town.”
