It’s fair to say I don’t often drive my car into the central Beverley, mainly because I find it far easier to get about the town on a push bike.
However, on this particular occasion due to time constraints, I had little option but to drive into the centre of town find a place to park.
After a bit of faffing about soon found a place to park near St Mary’s Church in the heart of the Georgian Quarter of Beverley North Bar Within.
As I approached the parking meter, everything looked perfectly normal, went through the process of purchasing a ticket a change into the machine.
However, despite putting 60p in followed by a further 20p the machine failed to print me a ticket or refund my cash to me.
On contacting the telephone number which is on the parking meter the people at the other end very helpful. However, were unable to issue me a refund.
The advice I was given was that to receive a refund I would be to put something in writing to the council and any monies I’d lost would be sent back to me.
Further advice was offered to me in that I would need to purchase a parking ticket from another machine as they were unable to offer me any assurances that I would not receive a ticket for a traffic warden.
Sadly, there was no indication on the machine this was actually happening, however, a very tell-tale sign was that the clock read 1 AM as oppose the actual time which was 1230 the afternoon.
It was only me today lost money in the meter, in the short time, I was stood there at St Mary’s Church number of people gathered around the meter wondering what had happened to their money and the parking ticket they purchased.
While I’m not blaming anyone for what happened surely with the modern machines if they have gone wrong should have the ability to either no longer accept money or display message makes it clear to people that it is not functioning.
The people who I spoke to by the meter were not from Beverley. They were visitors to the town. I can’t imagine for one moment that this was the ideal start to their visit to the town.
