The blue and golds cut loose in the second half of this encounter at the Beverley Leisure Centre to boost their point’s difference and keep their top four hopes alive. Leading 28-16 at the break, coach Pat Howdle told his men “Get your discipline in order and cut out the silly penalties and the points will flow.”
Beverley got off to a flying start which perhaps led to complacency. In the 5th minute, Jack Howdle broke the line 40 meters out and found Lewis Poskitt supporting perfectly on his inside, who went in under the posts for Bobby Howdle to convert. The re-start kick went out on the full immediately putting the visitors under pressure. In the next set, Jack Humphries and Joe Morley were influential as the ball was shipped swiftly to the left for Owen Riley to score.
Milford managed to get some field position and replied with a try before Bobby Howdle hit back with a try of his own with an incisive dart fro dummy half. Penalties and indiscipline plagued the home side as Milford again pulled back a try. They began to look dangerous in attack, but an over-ambitious pass went into the hands of Chris Johnson, who went 50 meters for an interception try. This still failed to settle Beverley as the visitors again replied with a try following an attack from deep inside their own half.
Right on the stroke of half time Milford lost possession close to their own line. In the next set, Guy Adams, who came off the bench went over fro dummy half to score. With Howdle adding the extras the lead increased to 28-16.
In the second half, Beverley took complete control. There was some breathtaking handling at times as they put on something of an exhibition. Jake Hart-Fisher and Jack Humphries got the scoreboard rolling early in the half with scores. Then Glen Anfield playing on the wing, proved there can be very few pacier players in the division as he helped himself to a hat-trick in just ten minutes. The first two resulted from fluent handling to the left and the last saw him intercept a kick from deep inside his own half and sprint the rest of the way.
Matt Newton added a try before Sam Roe broke from inside his own half and found the supporting Owen Riley, who went over for the twelfth try of the afternoon. The tenth conversion was added from the touchline by Bobby Howdle. The committee’s man of the match award again went to Jake Hart-Fisher in another typically all action display constantly a real handful to bring to ground.
The blue and golds have a big game this Saturday when they take on Hull Wyke in their only derby match in the division. Wyke lie in 3rd place, Beverley in 5th and the match is crucial to the top four aspirations of both sides as it seems Mirfield Stags are likely to come top.
In the corresponding fixture earlier in the season Hull Wyke edged the game 18-16 at the Leisure Centre so Beverley will feel that they owe their opponents one. Kick-off is 2.30pm at William Gee school nearby to Hull Wyke’s normal Cropton Road ground which is closed due to building works.
