What The Butler Saw At The Treasure House

Treasure House

Beverley Treasure House is hosting a talk about the more private ‘goings-on’ behind the glamorous façade of the country house, as witnessed by the butler, on Tuesday, 8 September at 6.30pm.

Robert Chester, museums education officer for Sewerby Hall and Gardens, will be revealing what life was like in the 18th and 19th century country house. It is no coincidence that the phrase ‘What the Butler Saw’ has become a saucy seaside postcard innuendo.

Upstairs, downstairs and between stairs there was scandal, romance, excess and sex, much like a living soap opera. The butler was the one servant who saw it all, being free to come and go on both sides of the green baize door.

The talk takes place in the Education Room at The Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley, HU17 8HE.

Tickets are £5 each and can be booked online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/events, by calling (01482) 392699 (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm) or by visiting the Archives on the ground floor of the Treasure House.
