Scenes for a new lavish ITV Period Drama that will take over from Downtown Abbey are to be filmed at Beverley Minster.
Victoria, a drama that tells the life of Queen Victoria have started filming the show that will hit our screens next year and they will begin filming in Beverley next month.
Mayor of Beverley Peter Astell says it is good news for Beverley, he said;
“Filming of a TV programme in Beverley has got to be good for the town, especially when it is of national interest and involves royalty and Queen Victoria.”
“From what we know the first scenes filmed will be her Coronation, then her Wedding and the third shoot will be her funeral.”
Jenna Coleman will star as the young Queen Victoria in the ambitious 8-part drama that follows the early life of Queen Victoria.
The series will show her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18, through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.
Queen Victoria went on to rule for 63 years, and was our longest serving monarch until she was overtaken by Elizabeth II on 9th September this year.
Victoria is the first screenplay from novelist Daisy Goodwin who is a former TV producer and is being put together by Mommoth Productions, the makers of Poldark that was shown on the BBC and featured Eleanor Tomlinson an actress from Beverley.
Producer Damien Timmer said:
“Queen Victoria’s court is the perfect setting for an epic drama – a seething hotbed of scandal, corruption and romantic intrigue, involving everyone from the humblest dresser to the Mistress of the Robes, the lowliest bootboy to the Lord Chamberlain.”
Cll Astell added;
“Once the film is shown on TV or wherever, it will bring extra visitors to the town and especially to the Minster.”
“Beverley has a lot going for it at the moment we need to capitalise on such occasions.”
